01Kolsai, Kaindy and why they go together

The Kolsai Lakes are three stacked alpine lakes in the Kungey Alatau; the lower lake sits at about 1,800 metres in dark conifer forest. A short drive away, Kaindy Lake hides a drowned spruce forest born from a 1911 earthquake — bare trunks standing underwater in glass-clear meltwater. Almost everyone pairs them with Charyn Canyon, because the road there passes close and the three together make the definitive Almaty-region nature trip.

02One long day or a relaxed overnight

You can do Kolsai, Kaindy and Charyn in a single big day, but it is long. Our overnight version stays in a guesthouse near the lakes, so you reach Kaindy and Lower Kolsai with time to walk the shore, then take Charyn in good light the next day. If you want a hike up toward the second Kolsai lake, we build in the hours for it.

03What to know before you go

The lakes sit in a border zone near Kyrgyzstan, so carry your original passport — copies are not accepted at checks. Bring a warm layer even in summer; the water and the evenings are cold at altitude. We handle the park fees, the UAZ transfer to Kaindy, and the guesthouse booking.

How far is Kolsai from Almaty?
It is roughly a 5 to 6 hour drive each way, which is exactly why the overnight version is so popular — you get the lakes and Charyn without a punishing single day.
