01What you see in Altyn Emel
Altyn Emel is a vast national park of desert steppe between the Ili River and the mountains. Its signature sights are the Singing Dune — a 150-metre dune that hums when the sand slides — and the Aktau Mountains, layered white, red, and green hills built from millions of years of lake sediment. Add the ancient Besshatyr burial mounds and the Oshaktas stones and you have a landscape that feels closer to Mars than to the green valleys near Almaty.
02Why Altyn Emel needs two days
The park is big and the drives between sights are long, much of it on rough track that needs a real 4x4. A rushed single day is mostly driving. Two days lets you reach the Singing Dune for good light, explore the Aktau Mountains properly, and stay over near the park. On longer trips we combine Altyn Emel with Charyn Canyon and the lakes into one southeast Kazakhstan loop.
03How we run Altyn Emel
We arrange the park permits and ranger escort, drive a 4x4 built for the terrain, and time the dune and the mountains for the hours they look their best. Bring sun protection and water; the park is hot and exposed, and there are no shops inside.
