For the headline sights of the Almaty region and the Karakol side of Issyk-Kul, yes. It is a focused route, not a leisurely grand tour. If you want to add the south shore, eagle hunters or more of Kyrgyzstan, we can extend it.

A lake on the Kazakh side that some travellers nickname the Kazakh Iceland for its bare, treeless, dramatic look. We stop there to break the drive toward the border. If conditions or timing do not allow it on your dates, we tell you honestly and swap in an equally good stop.

How fit do I need to be?

Reasonably fit. The horse ride toward Ala-Kul needs no experience but does involve a few hours in the saddle at altitude. The rest is walking at lakes and canyons plus driving. We rate it hard mainly for the altitude and the distances.
