Southern city and Sulayman Mountain
Sulayman Mountain offers views over the city—climb it for panoramic shots. The bazaar is a photographer's playground: colorful stalls, people, textures. Morning (8:00-10:00) is best for bazaar photography when it's most active. For mountain shots, late afternoon (17:00-19:00) gives warm light on the city below.
What the name means
"Osh" (Ош) is the city's name. The etymology is debated: it may come from a Turkic word meaning "watchtower" or "fortress," or from an older, pre-Turkic name. Local tradition holds that the city was founded by King Solomon (Sulayman in Islamic tradition), which is why the mountain is called Sulayman-Too (Solomon's Mountain).
Where it is
In southern Kyrgyzstan, in the Fergana Valley, about 600 km south of Bishkek. The city sits at roughly 1,000 meters elevation, on the Ak-Buura River. Access is via a long drive from Bishkek (10-12 hours) or by air (Osh has an airport with flights from Bishkek and international connections). The city is close to the border with Uzbekistan.
How it developed
Osh has been inhabited for millennia. Archaeological evidence shows settlement from at least the 1st millennium BCE. The city was a trading center on routes connecting the Fergana Valley with other parts of Central Asia, China, and South Asia. In the medieval period, it was part of various Turkic and Mongol empires. Russian control came in the 19th century. Today, Osh is a major city in southern Kyrgyzstan, with a diverse population (Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and others) and a mix of traditional and modern elements.
Local legend
There's a documented legend about Sulayman Mountain: King Solomon (Sulayman) stopped here during his travels and tied his horse to the mountain. The mountain is considered sacred, and pilgrims have visited it for centuries. Caves in the mountain are said to have healing properties. The mountain's UNESCO World Heritage status recognizes both its archaeological significance (petroglyphs, historical sites) and its cultural role as a sacred place.
People & history
Osh has a long history as a trading and cultural center. The city's bazaar is one of Central Asia's oldest markets, operating for centuries. The population is ethnically diverse: Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and other groups. This diversity has sometimes led to tensions (notably in 1990 and 2010), but the city also represents the multicultural character of the Fergana Valley. Sulayman Mountain, with its petroglyphs, caves, and historical sites, is evidence of the area's long human presence.

Osh is Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city, located in the Fergana Valley in the south. The city is ancient-locals claim it's 3,000 years old, making it older than Rome. Whether that's accurate or not, Osh has been a trading center for centuries, sitting at the crossroads of routes connecting Central Asia, China, and South Asia.
The city's main landmark is Sulayman Mountain (Sulayman-Too), a small hill in the city center that's a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mountain has caves with petroglyphs, a museum, and a mosque. Osh is also known for its large bazaar, one of Central Asia's oldest markets.
Osh is beautiful, but the road there is long. We make it comfortable with private 4x4s and experienced drivers.
